Iquitos, Peru: A Dog's Life


Mohammed laid in the dirt and wept like a dog.

Life is so good sitting down at a clean table at an outdoor cafe on the Malecon Tarapaca by the riverside in the Amazon, clean stone paving blocks stretching out to the white painted concrete balustrade, enormous ceiba trees along the bank rising up and overhanging the sidewalk along the riverside walkway, submerged fruit-bearing cercropia trees ranging up to 50 feet visible in high water attract birds of many sorts, and tree limbs are oft times thick with the black feathered and long tailed Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani), while the river sports the blue and white Ringed Kingfisher (Ceryle torquata), and the city shows off the lowly Blue-headed Parrot (Pionus menstruus), egrets in shallow water, Greater and Lesser Yellowheaded vultures soaring is circles above the scene, a lone man with a blade-shaped paddle carefully coaxing his hand hewn peke-peke boat through the low water to the shore, a serenity enveloping and embracing, a warmth of the day and the slight breezes of evening on the riverside of the Amazon. Life is so good....
